Mollie Chounard
"As a child I was enthralled with knights, history, and the stories surrounding them. With age the romantic notions faded, but were replaced with an appreciation for the craftsmanship, decoration, and general aesthetic associated with them. When looking for a subject for my art, it seemed only natural to draw inspiration from history - in particular the architecture, costume, and decoration of the Gothic, Medieval, Renaissance, and Elizabethan eras."
"I also draw inspiration from Surrealism and it's ability to make me feel as if I've been transported to an imaginary world. I try to create the same tone and feel in my works by using subjects that are recognizable, but seen in an out of the ordinary way to create a sense of unreality. I typically use multiple subjects to emphasize relationships and comparisons and blend the lines between foreground and background, sometimes allowing them compete with each other for dominance. In doing this, I'm trying to go beyond merely illustrating a story and create imaginations."
