Artist Fern Whitaker is a native of the hills and valleys of Missouri. Born in St. Louis, she contributes most of her love of the outdoors to growing up along the riverbank and sloughs of West Alton, Missouri. "It was a great place to grow, a source of  never-ending places to explore and things to find along the beautiful Mississippi."  
     After High School she went to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Under the tutelage of such artists and teachers as Dr. David Huntley and Larry Marcella, her talents continued to grow and blossom. She was the first freshman ever to win the Gold Award in the Spring Art Show. Her media encompasses  acrylics, oils, watercolors, pastels, pen and ink and scratchboard. The University Museum still holds several of her pieces. 
     Her first One-Woman show was in Van Buren, Missouri in 1967. It was during that time that she lived in Brunot, Missouri and had an antique Smoke House that she used as a studio. She is still known as the Smoke House artist. She was a charter member and first president of Hill Folk Art League in Piedmont, Missouri. As such, she was approached to create a 10' x 12' mural of the Ozark flora and fauna at the Starlight Inn. Doing murals is still one of her favorite activities.
    In 1971 she married Les Whitaker. They purchased the home where they still live in Florissant. Fern started doing artwork in her home studio and has continued to do so. Now that her children are gown she is painting even more.
