Judge's Statement:  At first glance the variety of styles and subject matter in the submissions for Beyond the Lens was striking, and I made it a goal to preserve that variety in the final pieces for the show.

Some of the photos drew me in and spoke to my own personal aesthetic. Others challenged me to see the beauty in the captured images through the quality of light, strong composition, and print quality, creating photographs that are undeniably appealing. A question that is often asked is how did I come to choose the work for the show? While I would have loved to include more photographs, there is only very limited wall space. What I looked for in the final selections were works that had strong presentation, were printed well, had interesting compositions, and most importantly, surprised me in some way. Each selection for the show had some combination of these elements.

I would like to thank each of the artists for submitting work to Beyond the Lens. It was a joy to view each of your submissions. While there are no hard and fast rules for what constitutes good work or to determine what work will be selected for the show, I encourage each artist to continue to create and submit work in future exhibitions.
