Pastel Landscapes and Other Chaulk Dreams: The Art of Juliette Travous
Exhibition Dates: March 5 - April 6, 2008
Artist Juliette Travous
“I am drawn to paint the landscape (no pun intended).  I see a beautiful piece of nature and want to immediately put it on paper to convey the feelings that I felt when I saw it initially; joy, awe, reverence or just plain WOW.  It is my intention to bring out that WOW when viewing this show; Landscapes and other Chaulk Dreams.  Even the figures; whether a fully developed painting or a charcoal "sketch", are a form of landscape to me, with the curves of the body reminiscent of the hills and valleys of the land and the facial expressions the mood or atmosphere.  I see beauty wherever I go and I want to surround myself with that beauty in my paintings, no matter where I may be.

Many of my landscapes are completed "en plein aire".  However, I am doing more and more with the use of photography; either as a tool to help with the details of a painting completed outside or as the inspiration for the entire painting.  Many of the scenes in nature are fleeting and a camera helps to capture the minute or seconds of beauty.  I try to bring a camera with me even when driving to work.  The painting Creve Coeur morning was based on a photo I took on the way to work on an early autumn morning.”
